Van Heflin was born Emmett Evan Heflin Jr on December 13, 1910 in Walters, Oklahoma. He became a popular star during the 1940s. Van costarred with Joan Crawford in Possessed and with Lana Turner in Green Dolphin Street. In 1943 he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Johnny Eager. Van's first marriage, to Eleanor Scherr, lasted just six months. In 1942 he married actress Frances E. Neal. They divorced in 1967. Van died on July 23, 1971 from a heart attack.
