Jeanne Crain was the daughter of an English teacher and a homemaker. The family moved shortly after her birth in Los Angeles, where her father was working on a new school. When she was chosen Miss PanPacific, was the 18-year-old Jeanne test shots for a film with Orson Welles to make in Hollywood. They do not got the role, but chose to study theater. A year later, in 1944, she played a leading role in director George Cukor. She had her greatest success in 1950 when she was nominated for the Oscar in the best role for the film Pinky by Elia Kazan. From the mid-1950s, she played mainly in television films and series. Her last screen appearance was in 1972.
She married in 1946 the actor Paul Brooks and was married to him until his death in October 2003. Jeanne Crain was a mother of seven children who were born between 1947 and 1965.
