“Keep your horizons wide and your waistline slim”

Greer Garson, one of the leading classic actresses of the 1940’s, proved to be a born actress from childhood when she fooled everyone by claiming to have been born in Northern Ireland when she was actually born in London. Born Eileen Evelyn Garson in 1908, she made her stage debut in Birmingham, England in 1932 and in 1935 made her first West End appearance in “Golden Arrow”, starring opposite Laurence Olivier. In 1937, Garson moved to America where she was signed by MGM Studios but returned to England shortly afterwards due to a lack of work.

Upon her return to England, Garson starred in several films in a relatively short space of time, which earned her five Best Actress Nominations in a row. She won her only Oscar for her role as the main character in the 1942 drama, “Mrs. Miniver”. Garson married three times: to English civil servant, Edward Snelson; actor Richard Ney and finally to cattle rancher Elijah Fogelson to whom she remained married until her death in Texas in 1996. The British Government named Garson an honorary Commander of the British Empire in 1993.
