Fred Astaire was born Frederic Austerlitz Jr on May 10, 1899, in Omaha, Nebraska. He started his career as a dancer in vaudeville. During the 1930s Fred and Ginger Rogers became one of Hollywood's most famous duos. They starred in ten films together including Shall We Dance and Follow The Fleet. Fred also made movies with Rita Hayworth and Judy Garland. In 1933 Fred married Phyllis Potter. She died in 1954. Fred married his second wife, Robyn Smith, in 1980. He died on June 22, 1987 from pneumonia.
