I have tried to be as eclectic as I possibly can with my professional life, and so far it's been pretty fun.
— Holly Hunter
HOLLY HUNTER drove a tractor on her family's Georgia cattle farm, which is a pretty amazing feat considering her full adult height is only 5'2". But the Southern dynamo has always been full of surprises and amazing accomplishments. At twenty-three, she replaced Mary Beth Hurt on Broadway in Beth Henley's Crimes of the Heart, and she later shone in three more of that playwright's dramas. On film, she starred in Raising Arizona and Broadcast News, and proved to be a funny, quirky, and moving actress. N.Y. and L.A. film critics bestowed her with prizes and glowing reviews. Hunter's greatest coup was landing the lead of a melancholy mute in The Piano by relentlessly hounding the director (who had been looking for a tall, Sigourney Weaver type). Mute performances often win Academy Awards, and Hunter got hers in 1993. That same year, she won an Emmy--she played a Texas cheerleader-murdering mom on HBO--for portraying a character who talked too much. In 1997, Hunter starred opposite James Spader and Rosanna Arquette in David Cronenberg's disturbing and controversial film Crash, which graphically explores the erotic potential of car crashes.
