In the 1960s Janet Suzmanstarted her acting career as a member of the British theater group Royal Shakespeare Company. In the 1960s and 1970s, she was actress in numerous British TV productions. In 1971 she got her first movie starring role in Nicholas and Alexandra, and was nominated for her role as Alexandra for the Oscar as best actress. In 1982 she played the female lead in Peter Greenaway's film The Draftsman's Contract. Her marriage to director Trevor Nunn lasted only briefly.
