Joan Fontaine was born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland on October 22, 1917, in Tokyo, Japan. When she was a child Joan's family moved to California and her parents divorced. Joan and her sister, Olivia de Havilland, both decided to pursue acting careers. The two women would become lifelong rivals. To distance herself from her sister Joan changed her last name to Fontaine (which was her stepfather's last name). Joan got small parts in movies like The Women and Gunga Din. She married actor Brian Aherne in 1939. In 1940 Joan costarred with Laurence Oliver in and was nominated for an Academy Award. She won an Oscar the following year for her performance in the drama Suspicion. In 1945 Joan and Brian divorced. She married producer William Dozier in 1946.

Their daughter, Deborah, was born in November 1948. During the 1940s Joan appeared in numerous hit films including Jane Eyre, The Constant Nymph, and Letter From An Unknown Woman. In 1951 she and William divorced. Joan married Collier Young, a producer, in 1952. That same year they adopted a baby girl from Peru (the girl ran away when she was a teenager). Her marriage to Collier lasted nine years. In 1964 Joan married her fourth husband, Alfred Wright Jr, but this marriage also ended in divorce. Joan continued to work in movies and on television. She also starred on Broadway in the play Lion In Winter. In 1978 Joan published her autobiography No Bed Of Roses. Today Joan is retired and lives in California.
