PLOT: Detective Mark McPherson is investigating the murder of a young woman named Laura. The main suspects are Waldo Lydecker (Laura's mentor), Shelby Carpenter (Laura's fiance) and Ann Treadwell (Laura's aunt). As he learns more about the case Detective McPherson becomes obsessed with Laura and her beautiful portrait. He is shocked to discover that Laura is still alive and it was another woman who was murdered. Now Laura becomes a suspect in that murder and the detective must find out what really happened.

- It is based on the book by Vera Caspary

- The costumes were designed by Bonnie Cashin

- Jennifer Jones and Hedy Lamarr were offered the role of Laura

- Darryl Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, did not want Clifton Webb hired because he was gay but Otto Preminger insisted

- The portrait used in the movie was a photograph covered with oil paint

- It won one Academy Award (Best Black-and-White Cinematography)
