Winona Ryder has grown since the year 1978 on a commune near Mendocino, California. She has a brother, Yuri (b. 1976), who scored his first name after Yuri Gagarin, and a half-sister Sunyata (* 1968) and one half-brother, Jubal, (* 1970) from the first marriage of her mother Cindy. His parents, Cindy and Michael Horowitz, were active in the hippie movement. Timothy Leary was Winona Ryder's godfather.

In 1981 the family moved to after Petaluma, California. Since she was in the public school as an outsider, she was sent to a private school as well as to teach the acting school of the American Conservatory Theater.

Ryder was discovered by a scout at a theatrical performance at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco at the age of thirteen. It was considered for a role in the film Desert Bloom considered, but the role was eventually filled with Annabeth Gish. The debut took place in the movie Lucas, who was shot in the summer of 1985 near Chicago.

Winona Ryder was nominated twice for an Academy Award, for roles in The Age of Innocence and Little Women. For her role as Charlotte Flax in Mermaids, she received a Golden Globe nomination for the role of May Welland in The Age of Innocence, she won 1994 Golden Globe for best supporting role. Better-known roles they occupied in the films Bram Stoker's Dracula, Alien - The Rebirth, Interrupted and Edward Scissorhands.

Over the years, Winona Ryder had some relationships with prominent colleagues, including with Johnny Depp, Dave Pirner and Matt Damon. In 2002 she was convicted of shoplifting of garments worth U.S. $ 5,000 to a probation period of three years and a working edition of 480 hours.

In the movie Star Trek she plays the mother of Mr. Spock.
